Words That Rhyme: Students read the word pairs and come up with other words that rhyme.
Word Scramble: Students use the details from the book to unscramble the words (ANSWER KEY INCLUDED).
3-2-1: Students will describe three ways that the animals or insects in the book catch their lunch, explain two things they learned, and name one animal or insect they want to learn about and explain why.
Write & Illustrate a Poem: Students choose an animal or insect not featured in the book and write a four-line poem about it. Then they create an illustration to go with their poem.

Vocabulary knowledge is a direct link to reading comprehension. This vocabulary study provides vocabulary activities for words that appear in the novel Zane and the Hurricane by Rodman Philbrick.

Chapters 1-5: match word to definition & fill in the blank sentences
Chapter 6-10: crossword puzzle
Chapters 11–15: Use the context clues in quotes from the story to determine word meanings, then draw pictures to represent each word.
Chapters 16-20: determine which word does not relate to the others and then explain how the remaining words are related
Chapters 21-25: The task varies for each word (e.g. antonyms, synonyms, complete the sentences, name something, etc.)

This print and go resource is the perfect addition to a novel study on, Zane and the Hurricane, by Rodman Philbrick. This resource includes student handouts for 4 different themes from the novel. Each handout includes a brief description of the theme and explains how the theme connects to the novel. Questions are also included to help guide students in analyzing their theme.
Students will answer theme-related questions using themes present in the novel, Zane and the Hurricane. This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group work on a different theme.
